Joshua and Jesus: the true liberator.

“And you shall compass the city… Thus shall you do six days. And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams' horns: and the seventh day you shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets… and it came to pass on the seventh day… compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times… when they make a long blast with the ram's horn… all the people shall shout with a great shout… the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets… passed on before the Lord… and it came to pass at the seventh time… Joshua said to the people: Shout; for the Lord Yahweh has given you the city.”

(Joshua 6:3-5, 14-16, 20-21, 24)

First we shall note that Joshua was a symbol of Jesus Christ––not just due to his name Joshua-Yeshua-Jesus, derived from the same linguistic root––but because he was the leader, deliverer of God’s people, and who in turn brought them into the promised land. Everything as a symbol of what the Son of God will do at the End of Time, soon.

Before analyzing the passage about the conquest of Jericho, we must recall a very important moment for Joshua; once Jesus appeared and spoke to him personally, when he declared himself as the Prince of God, allowing to be worshiped by him and called Lord, besides ordering him: “Loose your shoe from off your foot; for the place where on you stand is holy” (5:13-15); which happened only––throughout biblical history––when the Son of God was, one way or another, showing up with his divine presence.

The siege of the city of Jericho is a skillful way of showing the System 7 that we have discussed in other notes from the author’s book entitled: ‘Prophecies in the Pentateuch.’ In this passage there is also a revelation concerning the interaction between man and God, his people and history’s seconds, between faith and action, action and reaction, joys and sorrows.

Jericho was the first great miracle of the conquest. It is a beautiful page in which God manifests his people, once introduced into the Promised Land, his majestic power and willingly love for them. In this case, the siege and the taking of Jericho was the direct work of God’s hand, using physical consequences owing to the crying and shocking sounds, but sparing the people of a pitched battle which indeed was approaching once this first miracle came to an end. God wants to interact with his people and show them how they are an inseparable part of the social construction we all dream.

In every aspect of this quote we see the System 7: with 7 horns or trumpets carried by 7 priests every day (v.3) doing a circle around the city––for a total of six times––indicating the 6 Times or Millennia during the human history, that should give way to the 7th, in which the Redemption by direct intervention of the expected Messiah would take place, bringing the final and decisive trumpet (1 Cor 15:52; 1 Thess 4:16), with its sound of Salvation evoking the justice promised by God forever (Dn 9:24).

There is more to this revelation of System 7. At the 7th day, 7 priests with 7 trumpets––symbolized the 7 angels with the 7 trumpets in the Book of Revelation––and only in that specific day, they added seven circle times around (v.15) the city, and not just one (1) as in previous days; this being not only a shadow of System 14 (also discussed in the Pentateuch), but a complete confirmation of what God plans to do by the hand of Jesus Christ in near time; as the apostle St. John prophetically revealed it to us when saying: “I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels: Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God on the earth” (Rev 16:1).

On that 7th day, at the sound of the trumpet and battle cry, the city of Jericho was taken, thrown down its pride and ignorance (v.20-21), destroyed its evil ways with devouring fire (v.24); and so will the be in our End of Time, the day of the great battle (Rev 16:14), when the Son of God at the head of his angels (Mt 16:27) will come back to this world, and not to let himself be crucified, but to devour much moral decay and rejection of his redemptive work, with devastating fire (2 Thess 1:7-10; 2 Pet 3:10), and to establish at the sound of the 7th trumpet (Rev 11:15), the eternal justice of God beginning with his Millenarian Kingdom.

After taking the city, and as if God was emphasizing about this was an important prophetic fact impossible to ignore, Joshua pronounced a curse under oath saying: “Cursed be the man before the Lord Yahweh, that rises up and builds this city Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it” (6:26-27). God in his omniscience was revealing the future, showing once more––to you and me––dear reader, that he does not change with the ages or times and that his Word endures forever.

This curse was prophetically fulfilled about 450 years later (1 Kgs 16:34), in times of the wicked king Ahab (860 BC) while he was reigning in northern Israel, and when an Israelite named Hiel of Bethel, not taking seriously these prophetic words spoken centuries earlier by the deliverer Joshua, was filled with arrogance and embarked on rebuilding the city, dearly costing him in the beginning and the end, with both the lives of his two sons: the eldest and the youngest.

Great part of the humans’ sufferings are due to errs ignoring the origins of life and the Holy Scriptures revealed by God to mankind through his prophets; and not in vain Jesus Christ referred to this 2000 years ago when he said: “You do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God” (Mt 22:29).
