“And the Lord said to Moses: Make you a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looks on it, shall live. And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it on a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.”

(Numbers 21:8-9)

If Jesus had not mentioned this passage 1500 years later when he said: “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life” (Jn 3:14-15), today many would doubt that had anything to do with the crucifixion of Christ.

Why do I say this? Because of the way it can happen to you when analyzing a prophecy, automatically thinking that it has nothing to do with the analysis; but yes, every ritual was a figure and illustration of something that would happen in the future, directly related to the Plan of God to redeem the human race.

Surely Moses did not understand why the Verb of God told him to incite such an event; in the same way that Nicodemus––also instructed in the law of God and Moses––did not understand Jesus when ignorant to the way of faith, and the need to be born again in water and spirit in order to enter the Kingdom of Heaven (Jn 3:1-5), explained that He would be raised up, like the serpent of Moses as a necessary redemptive act.

Today many are unwilling to accept of why there are earthquakes and tsunamis, and signs in the heavens and the times; however, Jesus was equally clear when he said: “And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven… And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring…” (Lk 21:11, 25). The Son of God, as the Verb and the bearer of new sentences, made it clear why so many signs and is nothing but the fact redemption is near, and the appointment of God with men is about to have place; it is imminent, at the doors.

They are worthless, so many climatic explanations and vain philosophies. The Creator of heavens and earth is who controls all physical and atmospheric phenomena which pertain to the universe and its planets. Do not play wanting to be smarter than Him, that will not bring you any healthy profit or benefit.

The ardent serpent set up on higher ground symbolized Christ on the Cross of Calvary, which in turn judged “ the prince of this world [or of the power of the air]” (Jn 12:31, 14:30)––it means the devil––also called evil and tortuous serpent (Rev 12:9). That snake was defeated at the Cross of Golgotha, by rising up on the third Hebrew day, as a sign of eternal victory over death; and that is why whoever believe in it, automatically his/her sins are forgiven receiving salvation; same as it was represented in this ritual.

Not that the person is free to sin. Every sin takes justice repercussion. If you violate the law, in one way or another there is punishment for it (now or later); nevertheless, the eternal consequences of the human sin were washed and forgiven by the sacrificial and redemptive act of the Son of God for those who accept him as their Lord and Savior.

Anyone who looks at the Cross and its redemptive work,carrying in your soul and heart every day, with failures but without hypocrisy (Mt 10:38, Lk 9:23) shall live in Christ Jesus forever after. That is the great promise of God (Jn 3:16). Believe it or not, distort it whoever wanting to twist it with religion, politicking, or worldly philosophy;and there are eternal consequences for not taking seriously the selfless act of the Messiah Liberator, for the clay vessel never dared to tell the potter: Why did you make me?
