Nahum: He who proclaims peace.

“Behold on the mountains the feet of him that brings good tidings, that publishes peace! O Judah, keep your solemn feasts, perform your vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through you; he is utterly cut off.”

(Nahum 1:15)

The prophet Nahum ministered around the years 630-610 BC. On the horizon was then perceived that the prophecies of God, from the Jewish people, would be silenced during the centuries they loomed ahead; until the Coming and brief historical period which would bring the Good News and the Gospel of Salvation: Jesus Christ.

The people would walk without God’s Word and revelations, wandering from land to land, once the Messiah foretold for them a greater condemnation; and the birth of a Gentile ‘nation’ scattered all over the earth, which with dignity and individually shall be responsible for the utmost diligence about telling the whole world through the epochs about justice, eternal redemption and the final Almighty Judgment. As a product of what was approaching––in Nahum’s time––it can be seeing clearly a new embracing prophetic activity that would last for the next two hundred years, followed by a silence that should only be fully awaken at the End Times, with the exception of that intercalated visit and miraculous short historic period of the boy Jesus.

The prophet Nahum, which we are reviewing here and whose name means ‘compassionate;’ prophesied in his time first against the capital of the Assyrian Empire Nineveh, warning the rampant Ninevites that “The gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall be dissolved [destroyed]” (2:6). This occurred exactly two decades later when the rising river helped the Babylonians while seeing how those huge and disproportionate walls were falling down, eventually invading the big city that was plundered at will. The king imprisoned himself together with his court in the imperial palace, which was likewise completely destroyed and burnt by fire.

The prophet foretells it by reminding the then newly historical data on the destruction of the Egyptian city No-Amon (ancient Thebes), which was also destroyed (3:7-10) around 663 BC by themselves, the Assyrians of Nineveh; when the man of God was about to begin his prophetic ministry, and who was now announcing that their destruction would come fatally alike with the same fury they had shown on the Egyptians, which were treated without pity or mercy, taking them in shackles into captivity, and not before violently murdering defenseless children in the streets and squares. It was the usual and known Assyrian brutality as they showed their imperial strength on all subjugated nations.

Nevertheless, between prophecy and prophecy, and without those could understand, the prophet Nahum reveals the most important event in human history: The Second Coming of God’s Messiah: Jesus Christ; who shall bring the Good News while his peace would be touted around the world.

The future peace of the Lord has been touted by his children––often taken as ignorants and fanatics––during two thousand years of history; facing imperial Caesars or local dictators, whether secular, religious or papal, and abominable and uncontrollable societies that have reproached and despised them through the centuries. Nahum tells us here, with peculiar vigor, about the weddings of the Lamb of God ratified later by the apostle John in the book of Revelation (Rev 19:7-9), and how miraculously we shall witness his descent from heaven, for the Holy Scriptures assert that “this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as you have seen him go into heaven… Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began” (Acts 1:11, 3:19-21).
