Rebellious Israel.

“And I will bring a sword on you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant… and you shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy. And when I have broken the staff of your bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver you your bread again by weight… And if you will not for all this listen to me, but walk contrary to me; then I will walk contrary to you also in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins. And you shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall you eat.”

(Leviticus 26:25-29)

The people of Israel, in violation of the everlasting covenant made with the Creator and rebellious against God’s ways, and immersed in overflowing idolatry, picked the fruit of this punishment 700 years later, around the year 3280 since Creation––720 BC––when the Northern Kingdom of Israel was taken into captivity by Assyria, then World Empire (2 Kgs 17:5-23).

If we read the passage in 2 Kgs 6:25-30, when the woman––justifying a crime and defending her cause in front of the royal authority––responds to king Ahab: “This woman said to me, give your son, that we may eat him to day, and we will eat my son tomorrow. So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said to her on the next day, give your son, that we may eat him: and she has hid her son;” we can see that during the siege on the city of Samaria, capital of the Northern Kingdom, hunger was so great that at least one child is savagely eaten after two mothers were concluded to cook him. This shocking fact is a literal fulfillment of this biblical prophecy we are analyzing in v.29.

Once this was happening in the Northern Kingdom, it took another 140 years, and is the remnant from the Kingdom of Judah, which is now also destroyed, for their constant rebellion and idolatry, opposing the commandments of God; and being the Temple of Jerusalem burned down with living fire almost to the ground. This time the people were taken into exile by the troops of Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar, head of the Empire (2 Kgs 25:1-11, 21).

This prophecy––as we see––was fulfilled and the people of Israel apparently gathered with abundance the evil they seeded, suffering a captivity that lasted about 70 years until the beginning of the Persian Empire, when Cyrus, king of the Empire (2 Chron 36:21-23), and even without knowing himself the true God but imbued by his ego as lord of kingdoms said: “All the kingdoms of the earth has the Lord God of heaven given me; and he has charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem;” thus authorizing the return of the Jews to their land and start rebuilding the sanctuary.

Today the rulers of this world follow that rule by heart; because the rebellion of the Jews and kings is the same image of the whole human rebellion to undo at will, regardless of justice, and as thinking if God could be deceived. For as the bird by wandering and the swallow by flying, so the curses and misfortunes of nations always have a cause that originates them (Prov 26:2).

This did not end the punishment prophesied against Israel, but it extended––as we shall see in the next note––for many centuries lasting almost until today, and still waiting in the near future a suffering never seen before, foretold by the Verb of God, who declared, referring to the agony about to happen in the land of Israel at the End of times: “For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened,there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened” (Mt 24:15-22).
