The Lord of the vineyard returns; what will he do to those tenants?

“Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about… and built… but last of all he sent to them his son, saying: they will reverence my son. But when the farmers saw the son, they said among themselves: this is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. And they caught him… and slew him.”

(Matthew 21:33-43)

This is a prophecy that dates back to the End Times, when by Yahweh’s disposition (Dn 7:13-14), Jesus Christ will come and destroy the evil and injustice which prevail, then instituting his Glorious Throne from Jerusalem (Zech 8:3, 22). Hence, as the man of God Daniel prophesied it will happen that “the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him” (Dn 7:27).

The Lord Jesus firstly details for us with great symbolism the history of Israel. The “householder” (v.33) is the Holy Father, God Almighty, who planted a vineyard... “hedged it round... built... and let it out.” The vineyard is the people of Israel, chosen by God from among the nations of the world––through the patriarch Abraham––to particularly bring us the Word of God, to be Creator’s manifested glory in the midst of those nations.

Apparently God’s grace was not enough for the Jews.

When Melchizedek, king of Salem, meaning ‘High Priest,’ appears to Abraham (Gn 14:16-23), the Divine Grace is manifested; opening to him the opportunity that of his own will and accord he could offer a tenth of the spoils received and once recovered from the opprobrium he underwent when they grabbed their wives and children; marking here a milestone in the story that––with a sudden turn––began to develop for the blessing of his descendants, and to all the nations under our sun (Gn 22:17-18).

While this was happening the wicked king of Sodom offered also to give him wealth, but the patriarch Abraham courageously refused it, clarifying unceremoniously that a man of God is not to be bought with gifts. The devil was there defeated and demoralized––example of this is the subsequent destruction of Sodom.

God became the patriarch’s Father conceived under a sempiternal and everlasting covenant. And Jesus––in this parable we analyze––recounts his people from what they had been much ungrateful by taking their origin so lightly, as when Esau sold his birthright for a bowl of red beans.

That vineyard which God created in Israel as a nation––the Lord warns them––did not yield its expected fruit (v.34). The Holy Father sent from time to time and from epoch to epoch prophets admonishing them for their evil deeds (v.35-36); nevertheless, they did not stray from their false idolatries and injustices, and instead were tied and buried in their passions, wounding some and stoning others disdainfully, as well in time reminded them the man Nehemiah (Neh 9:26). Eventually God sent his only begotten Son Jesus Christ (Jn 1:14, 18) but he was not enough for them and they crucified him (v.37-39).

The Son of God came prepared to give his life in sacrifice for humans, but he found a people determined to kill him without mercy, as a revenge for just declaring to be the Almighty’s Firstborn. This pretty much showed satanism and poor knowledge of God’s Word.

Since then the Jewish people––whom God was revealed in his grace––has done nothing but to despise many times and belittle and ignore in history the Son of the Blessed One, their true Messiah Prince. Thus this kingdom and vineyard represented in this parable were given to the gentile people (v.41-43), until the manifestation during the End Times in the majestic Plan of God. Men mostly non-Jews who––through the ages––would join the Church of Jesus Christ accepting him as Lord and Savior; grateful of his bloodshed on the cross at Golgotha (Heb 10:9). They have been responsible for these two thousand years of history, by fulfilling the Lord’s command of: “go you into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mr 16:15).
