The young Samuel.

“The adversaries of the Lord Yahweh shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder on them: the Lord shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength to his King, and exalt the horn of his Anointed.”

(1 Samuel 2:10)

Firstly we shall say that Samuel was also a symbolic representation of Jesus Christ, the Messiah of God. Samuel was called from being a child to serve the God of heaven. When being already a youngster––and while sleeping––God called him revealing: “…Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered: Speak; for your servant hears. And the Lord Yahweh said to Samuel: Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that hears it shall tingle” (3:1-11).

This lonely but determined young man becomes (by disposition of the Most High) a judge, priest, and Mediator between that sublime God and his people down here on earth; he is therefore undoubtedly a great man who dedicated his life managing legal and spiritually a people and nation which––like all humans––was prone to rebellion and vain delusions.

And speaking of humanity we see his earthly side, of fragile clay, from which we all suffer as mortals. Today we can find many supposed men of God who preach publicly to be perfect, with no family or social problems, and they are holier than St. John the Baptist; nevertheless, even though as much we investigate and dig in the Sacred History, not the written by different religious institutions; we see there all these men elected by God dealing with ordinary problems and headaches that we all one way or another suffer. Thus we see Samuel, who clearly was a valiant and determined human (15:32-35), and at certain time being already an old man, apparently feared to confront the arrogant king Saul to whom previously he had anointed him and made a reputable person out of nothing (16:1-2); in turn it is a fact that Samuel’s sons were a wicked and greedy couple who perverted the right of the people (8:1-5), although it does not mention to us clearly who was the mother of these young men.

All of this should make us think and establish guidelines before judging a man of God due to apparent surrounding failures; and Samuel was one of those men of God more fair and honest that Adonai has put on this earth (Ps 99:6, Jer 15:1). Be careful when you judge! Remember the words God told to even the same prophet Samuel when he was seeking between the sons of Jesse about who would be the next king to anoint, among the children of Israel, luck and destiny that finally fell on the then unknown future king David; however, hear what Yahweh tells to his seer: “Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord Yahweh looks on the heart” (16:7).

This prophetic statement––in the basic passage we are analyzing––clearly points to Messiah Jesus Christ, who would come into this world 1000 years after uttered these words; but in turn goes back to the End of Time when God will judge the ends of the earth giving for that strength to his King Anointed Son, and it begins the Millenarian Kingdom (Rev 6:14-17, 11:18-19, 20:4-6).
